The Butte Garden Club meets at 7:00 pm on the last Wednesday of each month at the Butte/Silverbow Archives Building at 17 West Quartz, and guests are warmly encouraged to attend. The Group has been in existence for over ten years and is a member of the Montana Federation of Garden Clubs.
Each meeting has at least two educational presentations. Dues are $20, about the cost of a good gardening magazine, and the knowledge you gain from membership is worth ten times the fee. Although we formed in 2001, Butte has a proud tradition of gardening and social service. In fact, the late Evelyn Mooney from Butte served as president of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. from 1957-59.
The restoration of the Butterfly Garden at Columbia Gardens was begun in 2001 and was a major community project. The Columbia Gardens was a 31 acre Victorian park on the east side of town nestled up against the Continental Divide at the headwaters of the Columbia River. The site of the restored Columbia Gardens Butterfly is in the heart of the Historic District in Butte, at the historic corner of Granite and Arizona Streets. Both annual and perennial foliage plants in silver-green, yellow and maroon colors were used. The butterfly form is the Montana state butterfly, the Mourning Cloak.
The Butte Garden Club membership is dedicated to:
- Education in the horticultural arts;
- Community civic improvement; and
- Fun and friendship
We sponsor a public garden tour, a private garden tour of members’ gardens, publication of “Garden of the Week” in the local newspaper, offer educational programs for our members, raise funds, and enjoy our annual picnic and plant exchange, and the Christmas party.
