Our small town is known as the "Birthplace of Montana” and registered as a National Historic Landmark; we are a small town with a large heritage. Situated on the banks of the Missouri River, Fort Benton is a haven for history buffs as well as canoeists seeking solitude and the unique beauty found along the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River. Fort Benton is located along the Lewis & Clark National Historic trail, the Nez Perce National Historic Trail, and is the gateway to the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument.
2012 News Update:
The Fort Benton Garden Club is looking forward to hosting the Spring District Meeting. We have had a busy Fall planning our activities for the coming season, visiting with the Chester Garden Club for their Thanksgiving program and getting the Community Garden ready for winter. We recently received a grant from the Lippard Clawiter Foundation for $3,500 for the continuing improvement of the Community Garden space to include the addition of more elevated planters, a drip irrigation system and fencing to combat our natural nemesis, the deer. We received a letter of appreciation from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management for our work with the BLM at the Missouri Breaks Interpretive Center for our help with their spring planting. This is a partnership we are hoping to cultivate (pun intended).
The Fort Benton Garden Club maintains six elevated planters in Fort Benton. Five of the planters are located in the patio area of Sunrise Bluffs. This past summer two planters in front of the Library were planted and members gathered to assist Missouri River Breaks Interpretive Center personnel update landscaping in time for Summer Celebration. Our Adopt-a-plot location in front of the Riverboat Museum is getting many positive comments. Members working on the various projects are pictured below.
