Gumbogumbo lily—according to Webster’s Dictionary: Noun; soil, a fine silty soil, common in the western United States, which forms an unusually sticky mud when wet. Anyone living in these parts for any length of time learns that the definition is slightly understated. And yet this Gumbo produces the most beautiful flower, the Gumbo Lily, shown on the right.

With the Gumbo Lily as our inspiration The Gumbo Gals Garden Club was formed on September 28, 1972 in Nashua, Montana. The purpose of The Gumbo Gals Garden Club is to kindle the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs, to aid in the protection of trees, plants and birds, to encourage civic beautification and to promote good fellowship among the members of our community.

sunflowerThe Gumbo Gals invite anyone in the Nashua/Fort Peck/Glasgow area who would be interested in joining our club to call President Linda Sibley at 406-785-2271, Vice President and Secretary Linda Kaveshan at 406-485-2233 or Treasurer Dorothy Skyberg at 406-485-2025.

About Usjrguysandgals

The Gumbo Gals Garden Club is a member of the Montana Federation of Garden Clubs, as well as the National Garden Clubs Inc. Check out their websites at: MTFGC.org and GARDENCLUB.org.

Gumbo Gals Garden Clubs sponsors a Jr. Guys and Gals Club, providing them with resources, seeds, tools and a slight financial assistance.

treeOur current research projects include the possibility of starting a community prairie orchard to include chokecherry, buffaloberry, currant and wild plum trees. We also provide financial assistance and participate in the Northeast Montana Veterans Memorial Park, located in Fort Peck.

seniorOur ongoing projects are participation in the Nashua Fall Bazaar, and as our major fund raising for the club, we continue to maintain the Fire Bell Tower, as well as the drinking fountain in Lion’s Park in Nashua (pictured on the right).  We provide financial assistance to Valley County toward the purchase, as well as our time and help to distribute over 2000 trees offered free to the public each year, to help make our community greener and cleaner (above).

nashuacollageWe meet the second Tuesday of each month (except January and February) either at the home of a member or at the Nashua Senior Center, which we helped purchase shortly after our formation on September 28, 1972. Our annual dues are $20.00, and each month we contribute some pocket change to the State reforestation project of Pennies For Pines.
